As we come to the end of the Easter Season with the Feast of Pentecost, let us pause to reflect on Jesus’ final discourse that is found in the Gospel of John, chapters 14 through 17. Let us especially look at John 14:6 and following.
Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This 14th chapter of John’s Gospel is rich in talking about the Trinity. Jesus is speaking about the Father and Himself as one. We come to the Father through Jesus, Jesus is “the way”.
Jesus also speaks about the Advocate, who is the Holy Spirit in John 14:15 and following. The Holy Spirit is referred to as the
Spirit of truth, who will be in us. This Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth. Jesus tells us that He is in the Father and we are in Him. This is very profound, in that we also share in the life of the Trinity. We are sharers in the way, the truth and life of God!
Jesus says that whoever “loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself to him” (John 14:21). Our life in Christ is ongoing. Our life in Christ is our life in the Trinity shared in through our Church, the Sacraments and the words of Scripture. They are the presence of Christ among us.
Yes, Jesus is our way, our truth and our life! We are loved!
