I have always been a fan of the Olympics, so this year I got to watch many of the events. I admire the ability, the dedication and commitment of the athletes. They amaze me, especially since I am not the least bit athletic. Being a fan is as far as I can go, but I’m very good at that!

This year was the first time that I remember so many of the Paralympic events being televised. My admiration reached a new level. Watching swimmers without arms or amputated arms or legs, or blind swimmers was beyond my understanding. Seeing sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball brought me a new appreciation of all that they must do to maintain their skills and positivity in the midst of whatever their disability is.

I ask myself, what did it take for them to accept their limitations and find ways to go beyond them to be so successful. Hearing their interviews after their events gave insight into their attitude and work ethic. Their sense of self-worth and enthusiasm for their teams were definitely common themes. Each of them urged others with disabilities to find ways to use their skills and find events and teams to help them live their best lives. They are such a positive influence on the many younger people dealing with similar situations.

And finally, I ask myself what am I doing with my own abilities and my limitations. I don’t have the physical capacity for sports, but I do have other talents. Am I grateful for them? Do I use them positively? Do I use them enthusiastically? Am I dedicated to what I can do?
